Angry Next: Won't start after long drives. What the ...

Ok, this makes no sense. My '84 300D started a new and very annoying habit.

Starts fine in the cold morning air. Starts fine after short drives around town. Ten, Twelve times, maybe more, in row. Lights never dim, instruments and accessories never falter. However...

After long drives (30-60 miles or more) I stop the car and come back fifteen minutes later and the solenoid goes "click". "Click" fifteen, twenty, maybe more, times in a row. A couple of times, luckily the car went ahead and fired off and it will always start if jumped or hooked up to a battery charger. What the $%#@ is going on? Got back from a 45 mile drive a little while ago. Pulled into the driveway and stopped the engine. Tried to restart. "Click" Disgusted I went inside and watched the football scores. On a lark went back out maybe an hour so later and it fired right up without hesitation. What is going on?

Battery? Connections? Alternator? Regulator?

I'm buffaloed. The symptoms don't match exactly with any of those options.

Help again please.

BTW thanks in advance.
