I'm really leaning towards this but long-term storage of the engine/trans is going to be a little bit of a problem unless the body lasts long enough for me to find and buy a house. Also a little afraid I'll "never get around to" finding a recipient for it.

Finding the next "needy" shell would be the ideal solution and get it in hand before I even pull this one apart... but what's it going to be, that doesn't already have the same exact problems I've got now? w140 would be less rusty but they're all still selling at ultra high prices (for my budget) even with bent rods (which there don't seem to be that many of anyway) --- and while I wouldn't mind an 87 wagon, every one I've seen that was a decent price was pretty beat up inside.

Think you're right though... just a matter of hoping the stars all align at the right time to do a swap.
