With the 85 300D the gauges, spedo, tach have the flat black button as the 3 small needles do on the Tri Gauge. the center button is aluminum and pointed. I just painted it black to match.

One of these days if I think about it, when Iam at pnp and come across a broken gauge, I`ll pop off some flat black buttons.

On my '82 240D, I recently had to replace the fuel/oil/temp cluster, as the oil guage was leaking. It looked like a PO had installed an early unit with the bright center button, while my speedo & clock had black centers. I lucked out with a P-N-P replacement out of an '82 240D (plus what appeared to be a brand-new dashlight dimmer, and a complete set of original owner's booklets & manuals as mine were missing!)
Now my leak is gone, my temp reads in C, my oil in Bar, and all my guages match.

Happy Motoring, Mark
