The self leveling rear struts for the wagons have always been about that expensive. I recall roughly $500 was the price back in the late 1990s when I was going over my 124.193. In real terms, it appears to have gone down in price over time.

As stated earlier, it only needs replacement if leaking hydraulic fluid. Ride quality issues are addressed by replacing the accumulators.
