Just to put 2c in!
There are a number of distinct accents in Australia.
I grew up in the hills in South Australia & when we moved to Victoria, some thought we were from some part of Europe.
when working in the USA in the early 1980's along with a few other Australians, many locals could tell the difference.
There are probably at least 5 different accent types in Australia & some new ones developing with the recent influx of Middle Eastern & Asians to Australia.
The accent from the area I grew up in has influence from German & Spanish settlers in the region.
One characteristic that has been noted to me by many from the USA is that Australians tend to speak sentences a little like a song or poetry ending with a higher note, when compared with USA type speech that can be more of a mono tone.
