Johnson said upon passage of the civil rights act "The south will be lost to the democratic party for 100 years."

Obviously he thought it was worth the price paid though.

Johnson is not my favorite politician but the passage of the civil rights act, which he could not have done without the support or Everette Dirkson (R from Illinois I believe) was a very important and worthwhile thing which he was willing as a southerner to do and did at great cost.
