I saw the piece on Pierce Morgan at work. According to the woman in the video she was born with a birth defect that affected her hearing. She was about 99% deaf. She could hear bits and pieces but was not 100% deaf. The cochlear implant that they put in improved her hearing to the point that she could hear her self speak, hear her kids.... etc.

I think it is amazing what science, man and a little (a lot) of creativity can accomplish. To allow a mother to hear her daughters for the first time is a good thing.

Here is a link to a Ellen DeGeneres interview that explains it a bit better. Something I thought was pretty sad is that the hearing aid costs over $30k a ear. Her mother in law cashed in her retirement to get the hearing aid. I am glad they got the money back but had this not been on line they would have been out $30k. We are willing to spend money giving a guy a chubby but not to help a woman her the voice of her children. How does that make any sense?
