My letter from MB indicated the warranty was extended only for sludge related engine problems. Reading the link Dean provided, it looks as if Toyota and Honda are having their problems as well, but perhaps with less publicity? Honda for their transmissions, and Toyota for their engines. Seems as if cost cutting is breaking out all over, and a new generation of accountants and business people are going to have to learn about the sharp edge of the quality/reliability vs. reputation/liability equation.

At any rate, the article indicates the issue is ongoing in the courts, resuming on 12/20/2002. But to me, if you really believe you are manufacturing a premium product, you stand behind it (not behind a lawyer).
