Vacuum pump infant mortality -- experience?

I just installed a new Pierburg-branded, Mercedes logo'd diesel vacuum pump (000 230 31 65) in my '96 E300. This was done purely as a precaution. The old pump appears clean and undamaged inside and is the "new" style with the enclosed bearing and four screws on the cover. However, it is the original on this car and has 286,000 miles on it. The new pump was made earlier this year in Germany and carries a 2012 date code stamp. Has anyone experienced an immediate failure of such a new vacuum pump?
