the question you should be asking yourself is "at what cost to American freedoms?"

The second question is what level of thought makes you a communist, and at what point are communist thoughts suddenly UnAmerican? Last I checked, you could believe whatever the hell you wanted. Being a communist in those days should not have been the same as being caught committing treason.
We forget that less than 5 years prior, it was fashionable to be positive about the Russians, as they were are allies then. Yet during the years of Mccarthyism, they had directors or wartime propaganda films that celebrated the Russians up on the stand. What was American 5 years ago, was suddenly not American

Don't you see how people who were exercising their rights to freedom were penalized for exercising those rights, regardless of actual treasonish behavior.

Sure, a few people who WERE guilty of treason were found, but thousands more were punished for being of a school of thought, which suddenly became "un American"
