Well, you have to start with the obvious. Is the starter on the same side of the engine on both cars. If that is yes, you can move ahead. If it is no, it is a big stopper. Another question is, does the five speed on the 280SL shift directly into the gear box, or is it remote and uses shift rods? If it uses shift rods, I would think you should look further. If it does not use shift rods I think you have a big problem.
