No it will not work. Here is a schematic drawing of the transmission in a 280SL. You can clearly see the starter bump is on the left (drivers) side. Now I doubt very much if the engine for your car has a starter on the left side. I think all W123 engines have the starter on the right side.

Just did a double check on the W123 with 280 gas engine and here is a schematic drawing of the bell housing showing starter "bulge" on the right.

Now could the bell housings which were detachable on the W123's except for the 1983 model year, be exchanged between those transmissions? Could be, but I thought the diagrams on the 280SL showed a "one piece" bell housing and transmission. I also think the transmission on the 280SL is not a "constant mesh" design but is a sliding gear type.
