The 82 300TD was a turbodiesel if I remember correctly, and would not have an idle adjustment knob. It should automatically adjust idle, or run rough...but never conk out. Check injectors, run some fuel injector cleaner through, or adjust the idle. This is all I can think of. If it starts fine, its not the glow plugs.
