In short, yes, it eats through the water jacket and creates a pinhole. Obviously compression is affected as well as combustion. You also run the risk of hydrolock and coolant/oil mixing. It will show similar symptoms to a head gasket leak. Read up on cavitation and you will soon understand how and why it happens.
We never got a confirmation if this is a common and or preventable problem in the 61x series engines. Does anyone know?
