I can safely say that this is not normal. I have a four speed manual in my car and my father has a five speed manual in his 300D. Neither of these cars clunk after hitting the gas. They are usually smooth as silk, especially his. He has a bigger engine than mine and the RPMs don't fall off as fast as my 240. As far as what the problem might be, I really don't have much of a solution to offer. Maybe the rearend? I know my dad replaced his a few years back, but don't remember what the symtoms were.
