Here in NC it's been a mixed bag as far as how smoothly the early voting operations have went.

There's the thread and quoted news article about the "recalibration" troubles they had in the Greensboro area with electronic voting machines.

By contrast, my friend who lives on the south side of Charlotte, where they've used the same machines for 2 or 3 elections now, reported no problems at all with the machines or check-in process, an hour-long wait simply due to the number of people that showed up that day.

In my county, they still use a paper ballot and electronic scanner, similar to what pjcoll described. Very well run and highly organized, they were cycling thru people at a good clip. This year for the first time, they were using laptop computers to access the voter registration records, instead of having to dig thru the actual paper records - date of birth, full name, current address - and once verified, a printer to the side kicked out a paper ballot specifically for your local district within the county. IMO, the best of both worlds - an actual paper ballot as hard proof of how everyone voted, and using electronics to speed up and aid the process - with immediate access to the state records to help clear up any local questions.
