I am not speaking about the Alternator part of the issue only the Glow Plug part that you say may be causing the load.

It is hard to trouble shoot this sort of stuff when we are not there.
The intermittent Switch that Kerry spoke of means the Switch is only on when you push and hold the Switch Button Down.

There is a similar switch that you push down on the button to turn it on and have to push on the button again to turn it off. If you have one of those Switches and forget to press it again and turn it off some times the problem becomes intermittent.

In any event there is so few compontents the system you should be able to find out the issue. There is only Wire, the Switch, the Solenoid and the Glow Plugs and I suppose you could add the ground.

If you think the Solenoid or Switch is causing the issue you need to replace them.
