However, from my observations, I don't believe these small retailers stood a chance against Walmart. I believe Walmart is a monopoly and intentionally enters new markets with dirt cheap products to put out the competition. They control every aspect of the retail business model, from the supply chain through to delivery channels, and they continue to expand into new sub-sectors of the consumer goods market.
How they treat their employees is no coincidence either. Walmart is to poor folk what crack is to a junkie, and the employees are like street level dealers, easily replaced. The American people are the losers here.

Adapt or die. It is that simple. Find something that they cannot do that you can and do it well or close your shop.
Well, Duh! What business enters the market with the desire to share their customer base? Every company wants to be "The One, the Only". Every NFL team wants to win the Superbowl.
And? Are their employees deserving of anything better? Look at what they are. They are at the bottom of the barrel and they are treated like so. IF and WHEN they decide they cannot stand that treatment, perhaps they should improve themselves and get out of that rut. If I decide I can get better treatment elsewhere, I simply make myself better and go there. If I cannot do better, I take what I get since I deserve what I got. That's like if you came to me complaining about your lying and cheating spouse. Well, either put up with it or divorce her and marry better. You wanna argue about whether the chicken (bad employer) or the egg (bad employee) came first, go ahead. Bottom line is they are paid and treated like they deserve. They are the bottom of the barrel so I wouldn't pay them any more than they are getting or treat them any better. Dross is cheap. That is the Wal*Mart business model. Besides, what have they done for me that makes them deserving of my care? Not a damn thing. So if Wal*Mart can get some work out of them, so be it. They are not fit to be in many other places or get more.
