Still curious if trans control unit is actually the shifter. On a 722.6 it really is a control module. Does your car show what gear you are in in the instrument cluster, or only by looking at the shifter itself, because if it shows in the instrument cluster I'd be interested in knowing of it shows you are in P. You could also try putting it in neutral and try starting it in N.
