IMO this (and any like it regardless of excuse) case should be treated exactly as a rabid animal.

There is no excuse.
Religion, politics, etc need to be excluded..

This rabid animal beat a CHILD to death.
If the child can be returned to life = let her live in prison.
Since the child is dead = put down the rabid animal, and incinerate the carcass.
Dump the ashes in the nearest ditch.

Never give a rabid animal sympathy or a second chance...
