I see ways of reversing the situation, but the existing political machines won't allow any reasonable option.

This is where I believe the most good could be done. The justice system has nothing to do with right/wrong, it addresses legal/illegal. I heard a quote somewhere that approximately said "the opposite of poverty is justice".
