When I was in school, there was a rather large paddle hanging in the principal's office. It said, "Board of Education" in large letters. Just the sight of it was enough to keep most of the students in line. The embarrassment of being sent to the principal's office to be on the receiving end of "The Board of Education" wasn't a pleasant prospect.

None of the students died as a result of this type of discipline and many were kept in line as a result. Today's society is too PC when it comes to corporal punishment.

Spare the rod, spoil the child.
