None of the students died as a result of this type of discipline and many were kept in line as a result. Today's society is too PC when it comes to corporal punishment.

Perhaps I am alone in the belief that violence does not solve a problem. I was taught to talk and reason. I have been sent to my room, deprived of privileges but no one has ever laid a hand on me. Not a single time. I do not believe violence solves much. I do not think it helps children other than to make them scared, I do not think it helps in international relations. There are times when force is needed. It should be the absolute last resort.
