Just a thought:

I have a 1995 e320 wagon. The wires near the false firewall adjacent to the oil filter housing on my car looked Terrible. I feared the worst, having to buy a $1000 harness. Further inspection revealed that it was only the Starter harness. $180 vs the whole thing.

Replaced the starter harness and no more problemas.

Again, just a thought.
