And not universally celebrated by all Christian traditions. The Puritans found no scriptural justification for celebrating Christmas, and actually went so far as to ban it during the brief time they controlled England. (Approx. 1625-1649, but look it up because I'm going from memory here...) This, among other things, resulted in them being run out of the country, and they emigrated to New England, where they again banned Christmas celebrations.
