If you do buy a sat phone, a Hughes 7100 or a Thuraya is good for the MIddle, East Africa and parts of the Pacific, but you might want an Iridium if you go anywhere else, because your GSM phone will not work in areas that have NANPA because sadly, part of the world is still not 100% digital...
The dual satphone-local phones are nice, to save money and get good reception.
Get a solar powered charger if you can, they are cool!
