Sounds like a crap shoot. I've seen a few that were really torn up that didn't seem to want to come apart. And I had one come apart that had looked great just before coming apart.

Obviously, the safe thing is to just spend a few hours and a few bucks and replace it. Also, that will let you sell the car with a clear conscience.
