I had one once where the aftermarket shop decided to start tightening the bolts from the flex plate to the torque converter before having the trans tightened all the way and bent the sensor ring.
Depending on where the torque converter/flex plate stopped made it either start or not on the next attempt. had to put a scope on the sensor to discover this one. Other shop was really mad at what we charged for labor. It was a real head-scratcher for them, then gave up and sent it to us (the dealer). We didn't replace anything. I could see where the "wow" or wobble was in the ring and got it straight enough to give a uniform signal. It was weird though. If it cought the sensor ring in the right spot it would start right up. If it was in the bad spot it would crank and crank.
So the trick to test this would be to try to start it let s say 5 or 10 times in a row to see if magically one of the times it decides to start. It was real hit or miss on the car we had on if it would start. Sometimes it might start 2 or 3 times in a row, then not start once or twice, then start once, then not start like 5 times. Boy it was weird. Yours might be bent more or less than the one we had, affecting how often it will start.
I think you can see the edge of the sensor ring around the bell housing somewhere, been awhile since this happened. 11-12 yrs ago probably.
was on a similar car, may have been a bit newer, I want to say with a 722.6, not sure though.
