I think I did it just using a inductive clamp on the sensor wire.
I also think that once I was on to what was going on that I could see the variation in this sensor ring, just by looking at it when the engine was running. I remember thinking I could have solved it just by knowing where to look. The impression I had is that they simply didn't have the transmission at least snugged up to the engine before they tightened the 6 bolts holding the torque converter to the flexplate.
