That's an old load, the new MK262 allows affective engagement to 700 meters. Also something like a modern TSX round is extremely capable of retaining lethality after passing threw brush and cars.
The 5.56 has come a long way since Vietnam, and the old M193. The Marines are moving over to the MK318 SOST round which is extremely affective.
Also remember I'll be firing these out of a 20in barrel with a 1:8 twist and polygonal rifling so I'll be getting over 3k fps out of all of them. Compared to the military standard of 14.7 inch's.

Learn something new every day around here. I haven't fired an M16 since the Spring of 71, and of course that was with iron sights. Even with optics I would have been shocked if you could hit anything at 600 yards, much less expend any energy at that range.
That said, I was quite an M14 bigot at the time for long range work. With an M14 I could hit a human profile target at 350 meters almost every time. My eyes were a few years younger at the time though.
