Fast forward 40 years now and its a whole different world.
The M14 while a great rifle is obsolete. Replaced by a slew of AR10's but that's not really doing something like an SR25 or HK417 justice, or the FN Scar 17.
AR's in general have come a long way, they are just about the most reliable carbine you can buy. Spend 40 years improving a design and it gets pretty good.

For example the army didn't and still doesn't have stuff like this. You can wipe this bolt and carrier dry than pump 3k rounds threw it in a weekend with nothing but a wipe off with a rag every night. Being able to run a lube less bolt is a big advantage in the desert or cold climates...
