Usually tubs are fed by 1/2" pipes. Having a bigger spout won't allow any more water than will flow thru that 1/2" pipe.

Edit: Wait a minute. There will be two 1/2" pipes feeding the spout if both hot and cold are wide open. However, I have a weird 3/8" goose neck spout on my tub and it fills the tub just fine.
