Practicality is not an issue.
My driving is mixed, but there is a lot of it. I'd only put up with a manual in a wild car like the TVR. That and the football-player-image put me off the M3. The TVR has its own new straight six engine. The motor is a real gem, but yes I question the reliability of other systems. I think they are better these days. I guess I'd end up taking the train more than I do at present. But heck, I'm a young man with no commitments, the TVR would be a total blast and about the fastest thing going.
I'm not sure the Boxster is sufficiently manly. Real men drive 911s, right?!
Even a SL350 is frighteningly expensive, but would hold its value and be mega satisfying. A car to keep. But would I always wish I'd got the V8? (which is a non-starter, money-wise).
So I'm leaning towards the CLK500. I decide by February/March next year.
