without testing the unit, I would bet some money the problem is the wires inside the wiring harness have no insullation left on them just a bunch of dust.

It's a pain in the aX##, but the wires can be replaced one at a time to rebuild the wiring harness. Alternative is buying a new one. Old used ones are also likely full of crumbling wiring insullation (biodegradable plastic!)
