Um, 87 has hydraulic valves... nothing to adjust.

OP,
the black gook in turbo pipe is EGR soot mixed with normal crankcase vapor oil. if you disconnect the EGR controller from the exhaust manifold, and replace the gasket with a solid copper or aluminum sheet, then remove the intake and crossover tube, and clean them REALLY REALLY well, the soot cake will not return. if you then remove the large valve under the air filter, and replace it with a straight piece of 3" intake duct, and cap the vacuum hoses off, your car will reward you with more horsepower, and higher MPG's. be sure and clean out the nipple that feeds manifold pressure to the alda, or remove the alda altogether...
