Seems that the transmission was low on fluid causing the transmission to do some weird stuff. Set it to it's proper level and transmission is working as designed. There is a good bit of whining noise coming from front of engine that, based on what I'm reading, is caused by the a/c compressor pulley bearing. Looks like a pretty simple fix. I may fix the car up some and flip it. It is a pleasure to drive.
