Assuming you are right, I had hoped you might provide the supporting data they have accumulated to bolster their argument. All I could find is that murders have dropped and violence has dropped.

I'm betting somebody somewhere has the data but isn't playing show-and-tell. If it's the gun lobby then we could assume they are hiding gun violence. If it's the gun control lobby then they are hiding a lack of supporting evidence for gun violence.

All I could find was FBI stats, which clearly show a downward trend in violence in almost every category. It would be really interesting to know what would cause all violent crimes to decrease but violent gun crimes to increase.

Not particularly, but I guess I'm just not sure what you are looking for.
Even if every statistic displayed a drop in overall gun violence, there would still be some people clamoring for more gun control.
Seeking reason from them is embarking upon a snipe hunt.
