Some companies are now offering reformulated partially recycled stock oils, which are arguably better for the environment. Whether they will properly protect your engine is another question, and since you haven't told us what kind of car, truck, boat, motorcycle, locomotive, helicopter or other contrivance you're contemplating for such use, it's hard to guesstimate.
If you're simply looking for "something cheaper," you're likely going to end up spending more money in the long run. Modern MB vehicles are designed for specified synthetics that have the proper additive base, and those will save you fuel and protect your engine; picking a non-spec oil is a crapshoot.

The 1st and the 3rd, but not as much looking as curious. The vehicle is a 1980 300d NA. In the cars I've owned, I've mostly used Delo and Rotella (whichever is on sale at any given moment). That was in a 1979 Datsun 810, a 1983 Volvo 245 Turbo, a 1981 Volvo 242, and now the Merc.
I've been running biodiesel in the Merc, and just wondering about whether there was a lubrication alternative as well. It's going strong with 300k on the engine. So at this point, I wouldn't want to sacrifice engine life for the sake of ecomony/environment. But if there's anything that lubricates as well as motor oil, I just through I'd see if I could find out about it.
