Don't know what to say to that...
As a former squid, I would hardly call it a vacation. We would much rather be in our home port with our families. I understand that ships were made to be at sea and supported being out when we were out doing our mission. Pulling into a port to make the politicians happy was not something we were happy about.
Heck, one of our fleet week experiences was to leave home port with high chlorides in one of our steam generators (strictly against procedure and causing damage the whole time), sail to San Francisco, do two loops in the harbor without dropping anchor, sailing right back out and back to home port. The ONLY reason for that trip was to have an aircraft carrier show up at fleet week.
We would rather have staid at home, fixed the ship, and visited our families two nights out of three (three section duty).
