I think the idea behind the "stick banging" is you're suppose to MAKE NOISE when you're hiking in the woods.
Somehow, a would think that if all the noise you're making banging two sticks together is REALLY ALL THE NOISE YOU'RE MAKING, I would have a distinct impression that at some point, a bear (or worse, a cub) would become curious enough to find out what's causing the "noise" - then you're in a world of hurt...sticks banging or not.
What's that joke about black bear scat smelling like scat and and Grizzly scat smelling like pepper-spray with little tinges of bells in it?
Leave nature alone unless you're trying to kill it for survival...either that, or run
just that much faster than the guy you're with.
