I'm on the NE side of Columbia above I-20 and east of I-77.
Is that a new hood or were you able to save the existing one and just swap the grille? If so where did you find the donor?
Did your ac condenser survive the wreck? If not look up vstech on the forum, he is the man when it comes to ac repair. He's up in Charlotte.
Here's some nasty things to look out for:
- front spring perch hidden rust
- glow plugs can seize in the head, they can easily shear off on removal, and then you are in a real pickle
- ac evaporator leaks, I suspect I might have this, it is a real pain to fix this but not impossible. Total dashboard disassembly and removal, then total disassembly and removal of the HVAC system behind the dash required.
- Flex disks in drive line - if they fail at speed it is very ugly
Minor irritations
"display defective" messages with radiator and washer icons, try replacing the washer jug and radiator level sensors. MB decided that both switches should be wired in series to the same input on the computer, with some series and shunt resistors, so if one sensor fails both indications come up. I bought both sensors, and changed the washer jug sensor (30 second job) and it cleared the trouble. I saved the radiator tank sensor for whenever I change the coolant next.
My reverse lights/right outside mirror dip quit working, it turned out the contacts in the switch in the gear selector (it's not on the transmission anymore like the 1xxx cars) were dirty and out of adjustment. New switch is $150 or disassemble the mechanism and clean/tweak the contacts $0
I went through a rash of bulb failures but that seems to have settled down for now.
MAF sensor went out, $220 part takes 5 minutes to install.
front/rear suspension rubber getting old after 14 years, somewhat expensive but requires special tools to fix.
Cool upgrade: My car had the analog cell phone in the dash. I was able to remove it and install a Parrot bluetooth kit and make it look stock. However you have a 99 and I believe they went to fiber optic bus for the audio/cell phone system, and so I am not sure that will work for your car.
Do the EGR delete and clean the intake manifold, your intake is probably full of black icky sludge from the exhaust coming back around into the intake. Search the forum for the details on how to do this.
Good luck, there are several of us with W210 Diesels on the forum so we are always willing to help and answer questions.
