Don't confuse decent, friendly or respectful with ambivalence. Some people have just given up and behave in a placid manner.

I think that most peoples' reactions to the phrase "forgive me father for I have sinned" is one of horror and argumentative resentment - Usually it is "what have I done? I haven't sinned - I don't need forgiveness"...

...they're missing the point - they're considering sin in a mass murdering Hollywood film context not as an integral element of human behaviour. With self awareness comes great responsibility.

To me it seems as though the majority of society is not self reflecting, There is little humility. I think that this means that on the whole "we" are not alright.
