When I did it last year, it was injected and you wait for a while to see what happens. The pain went away for a while and came back so I went in for another shot and after the 3rd shot, they warned me that if the pain continued to come back after a week or so, they want to send me to imaging. As I said, my insurance would not pay for more than 3 shots without imaging.
I wouldn't worry too much about the side effects unless I got shot after shot, day after day. 3 shots in a 9 month period or so wasn't worth the worry.
