Yes, see if the coolant lines running to the heater valve are warm on both sides of the valve with the heat turned all the way up.
It is also possible there is air trapped in the heater core but if you have been driving it a lot it should have burped out by now.
You will lose some coolant in removing the hoses but otherwise it should be as easy to replace as it looks.
