Fan (actually the viscous coupling) is pretty easy to check. Just take it off. Make sure you put the bolts back in and snug them up so the pulley doesn't come flying off. You'll know within 10 seconds if that's it... and it's an easy fix.

Then go through and start checking other candidates - alternator, power steering, water pump, vacuum pump, A/C compressor. Those components can be checked out by using a mechanics stethoscope. Just put the probe on each component and listen. If it's none of those, then maybe go lower and investigate the balancer, etc.
