Hmmm. Tough one without being able to look at it. Maybe the spindle has some dents in it. That will raise the metal a bit and stop a close fitting mating part from sliding on. Check that. If you find something, carefully use a fine-tooth file and lap it down smooth. Key word is "carefully". Make sure to completely clean off all the metal filings afterwards.
