Peter, why are you confused
My car (the '95 E320 wagon, pictured) came with a cellphone mounted in the armrest. Perhaps my handle (85 DSEL) has you thinking that I'm talking about a 1985 era car?
Your suggestion is exactly what I was thinking - just put a standard mast back in. I have replaced these before so I am familiar with the procedure
