You must have skipped right over that first sentence twice.
Up until the Renaissance, slavery was considered one of the natural estates of man. As the value of human life increased over the value of livestock for the same amount of work, the predominant views on slavery began to change. The Dutch plied their dangerous trade while Europe reached a cusp in changing attitudes. It wasn't an event, it was a 300 year process.
