Down? Easy. Up? Well, to a point you can trade airspeed for altitude, but with no available thrust, you're going back down sooner or later. Even helicopters can autorotate in the event of engine failure. The real problem is when you run out of airspeed, altitude, and ideas all at the same time.

Statistically, on a per mile traveled basis, GA aircraft are about midway between a car and a motorcycle in terms of risk of fatality.

Owning and flying your own aircraft tends to be what most people would consider bloody expensive, but I think Justin has that covered.

I'd get my private pilot certificate if I could afford it.
