The story had gone national in a big way before he even said anything. He is the president, people expect a president to weigh in on such things, and as the first black president, he was in a spot unique among all preceding presidents to perhaps have a POV that had some insight into the black experience that was more than merely intellectual. Whatever, it's clear that he would not win with you on this issue regardless of his action or inaction.

Imagine if Obama expressed outrage at 1/4 of murders in the US. That means he'd be spending no small amount of time on 10 cases per day. He would soon be a joke because of it.
